FHIR and IoT are made for each other!
The FHIR Specification is ideal for defining and a universe of IoT devices in a healthcare ecosystem. The List and Device resources are well suited for organizing and stratifying devices such as sensors, wearable devices, vital sign monitors, camera systems for patient monitoring, and an array of other devices and use cases as well.
FHIR has also shown to be an excellent data interchange standard for passing patient data between these devices and the FHIR repository. No need to change protocols from the FHIR repo to the device or to its controller. The FHIR Standard designed for flexibility and also for minimizing the data in flight and minimizing the risk of PHI exposure.
This presentation discusses an IoT patient monitor workflow that brings together the device, the network, the cloud, and the patient repository, all driven by FHIR based messaging. .
