What is Internet of Things (IoT)
The web of ‘things’ or physical commodities implanted with technologies like software, sensors, etc. to link and exchange information with other systems and gadgets on the internet is known as the internet of things (IoT)
The multiple instruments present worldwide that exchange and gather data by being connected to the internet are a part of the internet of things (IoT). With the presence and easy access of inexpensive computer chips and wireless networks present everywhere, everything can be turned into a portion of the IoT.
The internet of things enables people to achieve absolute authority over their lives. It also helps people work and live their lives more smartly.
IoT not only assists in automating homes through smart devices but also has many crucial uses in business.

Origin of the Term ‘IoT’

The main concept of a network of smart devices was discussed as early as 1982, with a modified Coca-Cola vending machine at Carnegie Mellon University becoming the first ARPANET-connected appliance, able to report its inventory and whether newly loaded drinks were cold or not.
The term “Internet of things” was coined independently by Kevin Ashton of Procter & Gamble, later MIT’s Auto-ID Center, in 1999.

• IoT instruments are increasingly being made to be used by customers.

• It is used in the field for gathering data, evaluating it for research and observation.
Transportation
• All facets of transportation systems use IoT. These include infrastructure, vehicles, and the users or the drivers.
• Lots of features are enabled by the active communication between these facets.
Home and building automation
• In many buildings - home automation systems, electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems can be supervised and regulated by IoT devices.
• These enable residents to have remote control of the house when they are away.
Industrial implementation
• Industrial IoT (IIoT) sources and evaluates information from connected devices, people, places, and operational technologies (OT)
• Industrial systems can be controlled and observed when IoT is integrated with operational technology (OT) monitoring devices.
Production
• Many manufacturing devices with communication, identification, sensing, processing, networking, and actuation abilities can be connected with the help of IoT.
• Speedy production can be enabled along with a swift response to the demands of products and product optimization through IoT intelligent systems.

Agriculture
• IoT is implemented in agriculture in many ways, such as gathering information on humidity, soil content, wind speed, temperature, pest infestation, and rainfall.
• Farming methods can be automated. As a result, conscious decisions can be made to enhance the quantity and quality of crops.
Managing Energy
• Many devices that consume energy incorporate internet connectivity that enables communication with gadgets. This helps to completely optimize the use of energy and the sense of balance in the production of power.
• Such gadgets include household applications, pumps, lamps, motors, etc.
Military Implementation
• IoT is implemented in the military field through the Internet of Military Things (IoMT). It is used in the field for tasks related to combat, scrutiny, investigation, etc.
• The probability of warfare in the future of an urban environment affects this significantly.

Drawbacks of IoT
• The amount of data being shared between instruments increases as the number of instruments being connected increases. With this, the probability of hackers hacking classified information also increases.
• It might get difficult for enterprises to gather and manage information from an extremely large database of IoT devices that they may gradually end up working with.
• The chances of all synched devices being corrupted due to a bug in the network increase exponentially.
• Communication between devices manufactured by different companies becomes difficult due to the absence of a compatibility standard for the IoT.
