Nordic nRF9151 Enables Global IoT Connectivity

Nordic nRF9151 Enables Global IoT Connectivity

At Embedded World 2026, Electromaker visited the Nordic Semiconductor booth to see non terrestrial IoT connectivity using the nRF9151. The demo shows how IoT devices send data through satellite networks when cellular coverage fails.

The system uses the nRF9151 SMA DK. This development kit supports external antennas through SMA connectors so developers match antenna hardware to geostationary orbit satellites or low earth orbit satellites.

The live dashboard shows telemetry from deployed devices connected through satellite links. One device near Helsinki sends GPS position data through satellites to a cloud platform, which displays the location and status of the device.

Satellite connectivity solves coverage gaps outside cellular networks. Use cases include livestock monitoring, asset tracking, environmental sensing, and emergency communication in remote terrain. The nRF9151 supports both terrestrial cellular networks and non terrestrial networks, which allows devices to switch to satellite links when normal coverage fails.
