IoT (sometimes called home automation) devices belong on a separate network from your computers. Many routers, firewalls, and wifi devices allow you to create a separate wireless network where these devices can live. Often, IoT devices lack the security features that are built into Microsoft Windows and MacOS and are vulnerable to attack. Keeping these devices separated from your computers at the network level will help stop a device that gets compromised by an attacker from infecting your computers, which is where your important data lives.
Note: The Echo device was used in this video simply to represent IoT. I am fully aware that it uses only encrypted protocols to talk to the Internet.
