In 2019, software development was crowned the #1 job in America, with a projected 22% growth by 2029.
By 2025, however, the landscape has shifted. Mass layoffs, outsourcing, and AI tools like GitHub Copilot and Google’s coding models have automated large portions of programming, displacing over 110,000 software engineers worldwide.
Tech giants including Meta, Microsoft, and Salesforce restructured their workforces, with leaders openly stating that AI now can automate many engineering tasks. While traditional software roles are shrinking, new opportunities in AI collaboration and specialized fields are emerging — signaling not the end of software engineers, but the beginning of a transformed profession.
