With 6 billion users, GPS, or Global Positioning System, is the world's oldest and most frequently used satellite navigation system. GPS is owned by the United States government and managed by the Space Force, an independent military component structured under the United States Air Force. GPS was developed as a military tool and is now utilized for missile guidance and drone operations.
According to Sarah Sewall, Executive Vice President for Strategic Issues at IQT, China's BeiDou GNSS is newer, has more features, is more precise, and has more satellites in more countries' skies than the venerable US GPS.
Furthermore, it is an example of "a new form of great power competition that most in the US government do not recognize," according to her. China is supplying greater accuracy, navigation, and timing information to boost its diplomatic, economic, and military power, and the US cannot afford to lose this long-standing edge.
In "China's BeiDou: New Dimensions of Great Power Competition," a recent paper published by Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Sewall and co-authors Tyler Vandenburg and Kaj Malden outline their finding that China's version of GPS is part of a longstanding effort to join the technological ranks of leading nations and leverage its capabilities to achieve geopolitical advantage in many areas.

According to a report in the Nikkei Asia newspaper, "data from US satellite receiver company Trimble shows that capital cities for 165 out of total 195 countries are observed more frequently by Beidou satellites than by GPS" #china #Iran #Brics Curiousbay #beidou
