With 6 billion users, GPS, or Global Positioning System, is the world's oldest and most frequently used satellite navigation system. GPS is owned by the United States government and managed by the Space Force, an independent military component structured under the United States Air Force. GPS was developed as a military tool and is now utilized for missile guidance and drone operations. However, technology has become important in daily life.
"If we had an attack on the system, you know, it could really bring so many areas of our logistics and supply chain, even farming, our transportation system, our airplane system to a grinding halt," says House GPS Caucus co-chair Rep. Mikie Sherill (D-NJ).
However, the United States is not the only country that has its own global navigation satellite system. GLONASS is used by Russia, and Galileo is used by the European Union. China's Beidou constellation is the most recent addition. Historically, the field of satellite navigation technology has been collaborative, with each country, or set of nations in the case of Galileo, providing the international community unrestricted use of their own systems.
