On August 5, the nation just launched its Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO). The space race has never been only about putting a country's flag on a spacecraft or making positive scientific advancements. It has always had a tactical and military background. As the US and Russia fought for supremacy above Earth for over 50 years, both nations invested heavily in space exploration. However, South Korea, though, could arrive first. What's the mission all about? The first robotic lunar probe from Korea, the Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO), also known as Danuri, is planned to conduct a lunar observation mission at a nominal orbital height of around 100 km from the Moon. It is a collaborative effort between a Korean university, research institutions, and NASA that will support the payloads, deep space communication, and navigation technologies. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) will manage the system, main body of the orbiter, and base station. The primary orbiter portion of the KPLO spacecraft is made up of six payloads, two solar arrays, three communications antennas, propulsion systems, and tracking systems. The KPLO project entails building a deep-space network, international collaboration, planetary exploration technology demonstrations, and surveying the lunar environment.
