How Made in Africa Military Drones Are Shaping the Future of Warfare - In crafting cutting-edge military technology and weaponry, Africa has often appeared to trail behind. However, a new dawn emerges: the ascent of homegrown African military drones signals a transformative shift in the continent's defense capabilities.
frican militaries are undergoing a significant shift by investing in the local production of drones. This comes amid a global trend of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) becoming increasingly crucial for modern warfare. Recognizing this importance, African nations want to build their own drone capabilities rather than depend on imports. This push for self-sufficiency is showing positive results. According to data from Military Africa, a resource focused on the defense industry, there are up to 35 different drone models either operational or in the development stages across Africa. This progress is impressive, but it also raises concerns about a potential arms race as countries vie for a technological edge over their neighbors.
"The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been developed across seven African countries by thirteen different companies, showcasing the continent's growing expertise and innovation in this field," stated Military Africa in the 2024 procurement data report.
A digital defense industry report identifies several African countries making progress in drone technology. These include Egypt, Sudan, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, and Ethiopia. So far, they've produced around 180 drones, with fixed-wing designs dominating (174). Rotary-wing and vertical takeoff/landing models are still uncommon (only 3 each). Fixed-wing drones excel in long-distance flights, making them ideal for tasks like search and rescue, patrolling coastlines, and even airstrikes, depending on the model's capabilities.
