Russia first used drone technology against Ukraine in 2014, when it invaded Crimea. Since then, the Kremlin has been working hard to develop innovative applications for drone systems. Not long ago, Russian publics posted a video online of an unmanned ground vehicle called Courier, which the Kremlin wants to use in war, Forbes reports . The new unmanned vehicle is the size of an all-terrain vehicle, has a tracked chassis, and is driven by a 6 kW electric motor. The maximum speed is 35 km/h. The robot can be controlled both remotely and autonomously, thanks to a new navigation system. "Courier" can perform logistics, combat, medical or evacuation tasks. In March 2024, such a drone with a grenade launcher "AGS-17" was spotted in the Berdichi area. In October 2024, Putin's army received a new batch of such drones, which they use in various military operations. Not long ago, footage of a "Courier" armed with 12.7 mm machine guns and additional armor plates for the tracks was shown online. The drone is capable of adjusting its course itself if there is an obstacle in the way. It was also not damaged by the explosion from one of the exploded bombs. It is possible that Couriers are used to clear the terrain for the landing of enemy troops from infantry fighting vehicles. New enemy tactics are activated due to the lack of armored vehicles and the use of foot rather than mechanized attacks on the front lines. Another video showed that "Couriers" can be used as auxiliary elements during an attack, as well as directly as fighters on the battlefield. Experts are confident that Ukraine will fight these "Couriers" with the help of electronic warfare systems. At the same time, it is also possible that in the future Couriers will receive their own electronic warfare system to counter signals that can jam them. A defining characteristic of the Russia-Ukraine war has been the rapid development and adoption of new technologies by both sides to address battlefield challenges. Russia appears to be addressing its growing shortages of personnel and armored vehicles by deploying Kurier unmanned ground vehicles to perform these tasks. If Ukraine fails to effectively counter these systems, Russia will likely expand their use in a range of operations, which could change the dynamics of the conflict.
As Russian forces adopt these tactics, Ukraine will naturally develop its own technologies and strategies to counter them. In particular, Ukraine will likely leverage its expertise in electronic warfare to disrupt the Courier UGV’s remote-control systems. In response, Russia may enhance the UGVs’ autonomy to reduce their reliance on remote signals.
